In 2015 a social media storm was caused when a toucan was viciously attacked by Costa Rican teens. The bird had its beak badly damaged and caused Costa Rican animal law to be put under scrutiny.

There is a persistent storm at Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela. Lightning storms occur for about 10 hours a night, 140 to 160 nights a year, for a total of about 1.2 million lightning discharges per year.

Estimates suggest the flooding caused by the tropical storm Harvey could destroy up to $20 billion in insured property, making it one of the costliest storms in US history.
